Today’s sales presentations that are given to audiences both small and large seem to be much different than in the past. This is mainly due to the technology associated with presentations whether they are geared toward sales or not. Most of these presentations can be made using PowerPoint or similar software tools. There are also podcasts over the internet where your audience will not even be in front of you. But the truth is, that when your are speaking before a group of people there are certain fundamental truths about a presentation that are as important today as they were in the past. The only difference is that people tend to forget these fundamental parts of presentation. Once you have the basics of a sales presentation down, they can be used with any technology. Technology can only augment the presentation, it can never substitute for it.

Preparation is ninety percent of the effort when making your sales presentation, with knowledge about the subject being the other ten percent. Being prepared has several components to it. The first is to decide on what materials you will use during and after the presentation. Some people need only stand up and speak, but it is usually important to have a visual effect. It doesn’t have to be anything like a projector, but can be a sales booklet with pictures that people can look at before your speech or you can make reference to during your speech.

Whatever materials are decided upon, they must be organized before your presentation and you must decide which order you will take when speaking about various aspects of your subject. It is best to decide on a plan beforehand, along with creating a small outline you can reference as you give your presentation. This way you will not only cover everything you planned on speaking about, but also do so in the order that you decided on.

The other part of preparation is anticipation. Anyone doing a good sales presentation will always be open for questions when they are finished. This is where product knowledge becomes extremely important. However, if you can anticipate some of the questions in advance, you can often answer much of the questions people have during your presentation. One of the best ways to develop this knowledge it to do a practice run with a couple of people who will not be in attendance at your presentation. You can have them give you feedback and determine what questions might come up after your presentation.
